Remains of Lea Castle at Lower Lea Farm, Lea, Lydham - Shropshire (UA)
This monument consists of fragmentary remains of a C12 castle surviving in the middle of a working farm: it was formerly a castle of the Bishops of Hereford. A Victorian house abuts the castle remains which are heavily overgrown. There is an urgent need to reduce ivy growth and carry out consolidation works to the standing masonry. Following encouragement by Historic England to undertake vegetation clearance and repair works, a grant application was submitted by the owner in 2018 but subsequently withdrawn for financial reasons. No further progress on repair works has been made to date.
