The Mechanics Institute, Emlyn Square - Swindon (UA)

Mechanics Institute, 1853-5; now vacant. Outstanding example at heart of railway village. The council served an Urgent Works Notice on the owner in 2009 and implemented works in 2010 to secure the building. The shell of the building has been stabilised but it is not possible to enter due to health and safety concerns. The "Railway Village", of which the Mechanics forms the centrepiece, is now a Historic England Heritage Action Zone. An options appraisal for the future use of the building has now been completed and a project to restore the building is in its early stages.
