State Cinema, George Street, Grays - Thurrock (UA)
The significance of the State Cinema is that, until recently, it was one of the best preserved of the 'super cinemas' of the late 1930s; constructed in 1938 by FGM Chancellor. The building has suffered from heritage crime and the roof, rainwater goods and interior are in a very poor condition. Planning approvals were granted in 2018 for conversion to a public house. Works commenced in 2019, then stalled in 2020. The sale of the building to new owners was finalised in June 2023 and roof repairs are being progressed by them, the LPA and HE. Discussions are underway regarding its future use.
