State Cinema, George Street, Grays - Thurrock (UA)

The State Cinema is one of the best preserved of the 'super cinemas' of the late 1930s. It was constructed in 1938 by FGM Chancellor for Frederick's Electric Theatres. The building has suffered from heritage crime and the roof, rainwater goods and interior are in poor condition. The reuse of the vast cinema poses complex problems, as confirmed by a feasibility study some years ago. Planning and Listed Building Consent approval were granted in 2018 for conversion to public house. Works are underway and anticipated completion is autumn 2020.
