Social Sharing of Web Pages

We can preview what will appear on Twitter, Facebook or LinkedIn when a page is shared on any of those social channels.

Copy and paste the URL of your page into the social platform's debugging tool:

If the page title or feature image doesn't work for social media but you don't want to change the content on the web page, you have the option to put something that works better for social in the 'browser title' and the 'sharing image' in Umbraco.

If you're going to use branded assets for a campaign, remember to brief designers to create a sharing image. They should be able to create a version for you that works across social channels.

When changes don't display on social

If content on your web page changes after it's been shared, you'll find that social sharing cards don't automatically update. To clear cached content and replace it with the new, preview the social media cards for the new version of your page using the social platform debugging tool links above.

Be sure to not only preview your page URL, but also any specific custom URLs in use for campaign tracking. For example, for our Life Through Laundry zine page  we would need to preview both the page URL and the URL with the tracking tag shown below to be sure that any new version appeared on social:

  • Page URL:
    https://historicengland.org.uk/get-involved/high-street-culture/twin-towns/life-through-laundry-zine/
  • URL with UTM tracking tag:
    https://historicengland.org.uk/get-involved/high-street-culture/twin-towns/life-through-laundry-zine/?utm_source=Twitter&utm_medium=CPC&utm_campaign=Twin+Towns&utm_id=Marketing
