County Primary School, Caen Street, Braunton, Devon
The school was built in 1873 as a Board School. It was enlarged with rear extensions in an identical gothic style in 1883 and 1896. Many board schools were built after the 1870 Education Act encouraged the setting up of local boards to build schools in their area. The boards were able to collect money from local rates (taxes) to pay for providing schools. Many boards employed architects to design their schools and developed a local style.
