Church of St Mary, Mill Lane, Ashwell - North Hertfordshire
C14 church (completed 1381). C15 north porch and aisle windows. Ashwell stone and flint rubble with red brick. Low pitched slate roofs behind parapets. West tower is of four stages and has deeply projecting, stepped-angle buttresses. Contains nationally important medieval graffiti co-eval with tower. Primary issue is the dramatic decay to the clunch on the tower, and the north aisle roof covering is nearing the end of its life. Parish worked up conservation options using an Historic England Covid-19 grant. Revised bid to be submitted to the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
