27 and 28, Market Place, 1, 3, 5, Bridge Street, Newark - Newark and Sherwood
A house of c1730 with late C19 and C20 alterations. Brick with stone dressings and hipped slate roof. This building housed the printing press where, in 1806, Byron's first published work was produced. Latterly offices and shops, and known locally as 'Porters'. Surveys carried out under the recent High Street Heritage Action Zone project have revealed the poor condition of the roof, and have investigated possibilities to bring vacant upper floors back into use.
