Boat hoist on south side of south dock, Bridge Street, Goole - East Riding of Yorkshire (UA)

Boat hoist of c1862 invented by WH Bartholomew to transfer coal from canal compartment boats, known as 'Tom Puddings', into seagoing vessels. The compartment boats were raised hydraulically and tipped to empty their contents down a chute and into the hold of the waiting vessel. There were originally five of these hoists, which were peculiar to Goole; this is the last remaining example. Structural timber and cladding repairs were carried out with funding from Historic England and the owner in 2016. Further phases of work are required to put all timbers and steelwork into good repair.
