Bridge and medieval gateway at Walton Hall, Walton - Wakefield

Water gate, probably medieval. Roughly-dressed coursed masonry. Central segmental archway with inner recess for doors, which leads to flight of 7 stone steps. Flanking turrets, from one of which it is said Oliver Cromwell fired the first swivel-cannon gun in England. The whole is surmounted by large carved wooden crucifix. The arch is in poor condition and a heavy growth of ivy conceals much of the structure from view. The bridge, which forms part of the Scheduling, is not at risk. The site has recently changed hands and we are discussing repair with the new owners.
