A bus driver being photographed at the opening of Rochdale Bus Station, Rochdale, Greater Manchester

John Laing plc built Rochdale Bus Station between 1975 and 1978. This man is driving one of the first buses to leave the bus station on the day it was officially opened. In the 1970s and 1980s, fewer people owned a car than they do today (2020). Car ownership increased, but in many towns and cities lots of people still did not own a car, so travelled by bus instead. The bus station was demolished in 2014.
