Anderson's Hostel, Swindon

Anderson's Hostel was built as almshouses in 1877. In his will of 1865 Alexander Anderson left £1,636 for the benefit of the poor. It was this money that was used to build the almshouses. The almspeople could be men or women over 60, widowed or single. They had to have been residents in Swindon for more than 3 years, and not in receipt of poor relief.
