Brentford Dock, Brentford, Greater London
Looking north across the river Thames at Brentford, to the east of Brentford Dock. There are barges moored on the bank. A Thames sailing barge, with its distinctive mast, has a cargo, possibly coal. These barges were very common. They were based on a Dutch design for easy handling in coastal and inland waters. They carried cargoes such as such as grain and coal collecting them from ports along the coast and transporting them right up the Thames.
