The hospital was built in 1853-5 and designed by WB Gingell. It was extended in 1887 and 1891. The South wing was added in 1912. When built it was described as '...functionally very advanced with a fireproof construction,... elaborate heating and ventilation systems, speaking tubes and a steam-powered lift,'
