The battleship HMS Audacious being fitted out in a graving dock at Cammell Laird and Company's shipyard at Birkenhead. Cammell Laird and Co Ltd is one of the most famous names in the history of British shipbuilding, and was formed by the merger of Laird, Son and Co. of Birkenhead and Cammell and Co. of Sheffield, at the turn of the 20th century. HMS Audacious was a King George V-class battleship of the British Royal Navy. The Bedford Lemere daybook records that the photograph was taken for 'Cammell & Engineering', which may refer to a subsidiary company of Cammell and Laird Co itself.
