Cannonballs at Portland Castle, Portland, Dorset

Cannonballs piled ready on the gun platform with a cannon in the background. The castle was built as an artillery fort by Henry VIII in the 1540s to protect Weymouth Harbour against French and Spanish invasion. This site is now in the care of English Heritage (2010).
