Chudleigh Fort, Chudleigh Avenue, Bideford, Devon

Chudleigh Fort is a Civil War fortification now standing in a public park. It dates from 1642 and was much rebuilt in the 19th century. It is a five-sided platform with stone-rubble retaining wall and parapet. The parapet has 14 openings for cannon. On the south side is a granite plaque inscribed in lead lettering: FORT ERECTED BY PARLIAMENTARY FORCES COMMANDED BY MAJOR-GEN. CHUDLEIGH. APRIL 1642. It stands on high ground overlooking the River Torridge.
