Clitheroe Castle, Castle Gate, Clitheroe, Lancashire

These are the remains of a motte and bailey castle. A castle is noted as existing here in the Domesday Book. These remains are mostly the 12th century tower or keep. It would have been surrounded by a defensive curtain wall and accessed through a gatehouse. This gatehouse has now been demolished but its remains survive as a buried feature.
