Eden Lacy Viaduct, Great Salkeld, Cumbria

This rugged landscape required a lot of engineering work in order to be navigable by trains. Viaducts were often built to cross valleys and rivers, and to make the railway as level as possible. This viaduct strides the River Eden just to the south-east of Carlisle.
