Edvin Loach Old Church, Edvin Loach, Herefordshire

An interior view of the ruins of the old church of St Mary the Virgin. This 11th century church was built within the earthworks of a Norman motte and bailey castle. The church is now a roofless ivy-covered ruin. It consists of a continuous nave and chancel about 39 ft. long, and a west tower. The nave is of Saxon workmanship, probably dating to the early 11th century. The whole of the lower part of the north wall of the nave is built of stone in a 'herring-bone' pattern. The new church of St Mary, immediately to the west of the old church, was built in the early part of the 19th century by Mr. E. Higginson. This property is in the care of English Heritage (2011).
