Elland Power Station, West Yorkshire

Electricity generating stations became common from the 1890s. Following the introduction of the National Grid in the 1920s and nationalization in 1949, provision of power stations was rationalised. A plentiful supply of water is needed as a coolant, and cooling towers (seen here) became a feature of power stations.
