Embassy Court, King's Road, Brighton, Brighton and Hove

A block of private flats built in 1934-36 by Wells Coates of concrete finished with plaster. The 'balconies' on the first to 8th floors run the length of the building and form clear horizontal lines. There are a lot of windows which is typical of 1930s architecture. The projecting parts were 'sun-rooms'. They were advertised as 'sun-admitting Vita-Glass Sun Parlours'. This was one of the first tower blocks and contained the first penthouse flats in the UK. Complete with mod cons including fitted kitchens and electric lighting throughout, these soon became highly sought after. In recent decades Embassy Court fell out of favour and by the eighties it was in a state of total disrepair. But after a campaign by residents the flats were saved and have now (2013) been restored to their former glory.
