Emma Darwin, Down House, Downe, Greater London

This is a photograph of Emma Darwin (1808-1896) from Down House. Emma was born on May 2, 1808 at Maer Hall, Staffordshire. She was youngest child of Josiah Wedgwood II (1769-1824), of the Wedgwood Pottery, and Elizabeth Allen. She was well educated and had a privileged upbringing, visiting relatives all over Europe and attending many social events. She married Charles Darwin in 1839 and they had 10 children, seven of whom survived into adulthood.
