Engine House at Scremerston Old Mine, Scremerston, Northumberland

This engine house was part of the Scremerston Colliery. Coal was mined here from the 17th century, but the remaining buildings date from the 19th century. This engine house, used for pumping water out of the mine was built in 1840. It was built for the Commissioners of Greenwich Hospital. They were one of the major landowners in this area.
