Entrance to Swinhope Horse Level, Allendale, Northumberland

The Swinhope Lead Mine was in use from 1815 to 1872. This horse level was made to link up with the earlier Whimsey Shaft. A horse level was a tramway where horses could be used to pull the carts of lead up from the mine. This entrance to the mine also has lockers, probably for miners' lamps, on the left and right-hand sides of the passage.
