Fothershaw Pit Winding House, Duke's Row, Aspull, Greater Manchester

The shaft and pit winding wheel located at the end of Duke's Row. The wheel operated the pit winding gear for Fothershaw Pit where coal was mined. When the pit closed the shaft was given a concrete cap incorporating a pit wheel as a monument. The wheel now (2013) stands in the garden of a recently built house. In the 1840s Dukes Row was named Fothershaw Row. The name had changed by 1930. Cannel coal (a good quality house coal) was mined in Aspull. There were several large collieries dating back to the 18th century. In 1896 the Crawford, Kirkless, Moor and Woodshaw Pits in the township belonged to the Wigan Coal and Iron Company who employed over 1,000 workers.
