Galen Building, Sunderland, Tyne and Wear

Built as a technical college, the foundation stone was laid in 1899 and it opened 1901, provision was made for extension on site. It was built as a result of new powers granted to Local Authorities by the Local Taxation (Customs and Excise) Act of 1890 to draw on central funds for technical education.
