Kirkstead Abbey Ruins, Abbey Lane, Woodhall Spa, Lincolnshire

These are the remains of the Cistercian Abbey of Kirkstead. It was founded in 1139 and probably moved a short distance to its present site between 1160 and 1175. In 1536 17 of the monks were involved in the Lincolnshire Rising. This was a protest against Henry VIII's Dissolution of the monasteries. The abbot supported the insurgents, as a consequence of which he and 3 monks were executed, and the abbey destroyed.
