Lady Hawkins School, Church Road, Kington, Herefordshire

This school has the inscription "Lady Hawkins Foundress 1632". Margaret Vaughan (later Hawkins) was the widow of Sir John Hawkins. Sir John was an Elizabethan explorer. He was a slave trader and merchant, a diplomat and a politician, a courtier and a double agent. He was Treasurer and Controller of Queen Elizabeth's navy. Pupil's at the school have written a book about him.
