Lane Memorial, Town Hall Square, Bexhill, East Sussex

Crowds of people gathered around the Lane Memorial in Town Hall Square at what is believed to be its unveiling. The Lane Memorial was erected in memory of Lieutenant Colonel Henry Lane who was known as the 'Father of Local Government in Bexhill' and was the first Chairman of the Bexhill Local Board. It was unveiled by his widow Ellen. The memorial drinking fountain was designed by JM Whitehead and Sons. It was thought that Henry Lane would like to have a memorial that also served a useful purpose. The £225 needed to pay for the memorial was raised by mainly small sums of money subscribed by local people. The Earl De La Warr gave the land for the memorial and a public open space.
