Lion Gate, Audley End House, Saffron Walden, Essex

The arch is the principal gateway to Audley End House. It was built in 1786 as an impressive structure to enter the former palace, Audley End House. The country house was a palace, in all but name, in the 17th and 18th centuries and is still renowned as one of the finest Jacobean houses in England. It replaced an early gate from 1616. This site is now in the care of English Heritage (2010). Explore an interactive map.
