Liverpool Airport, Speke, Liverpool, Merseyside
Liverpool Airport's control tower and original terminal building are among the earliest surviving examples of air transport buildings in the UK. They date from 1937-9 and were designed in a modernist style by Edward Bloomfield of the city's Public Buildings Department. They are built from brick with concrete dressings. Speke airport opened in 1933 using farm buildings for hangars and terminals. The new buildings were modelled on Hamburg Airport. A replacement terminal was built in 1986. This was incorporated into the latest terminal which was designed by Leach Rhodes Walker architects and opened in 2002. The airport was renamed John Lennon Airport. The original terminal building was converted into a hotel, preserving the Art Deco interior.
