Main Bridewell, Cheapside, Liverpool, Merseyside

This large prison complex was begun in 1857 and designed by John Weightman, who also designed the Magistrates Courts to the rear of the Main Bridewell building. The complex consists a main four storey block constructed of red brick with stone dressings set behind high screen walls. The front block is built in a Classical style which was unusual at a time when castellated Gothic was the usual prison style. It is now (2010) in use as a police station. It is situated within the Liverpool Maritime Mercantile City, World Heritage site.
