Priory Tower, Much Wenlock, Shropshire

This 13th century tower was once the gateway to Wenlock Priory. The priory was originally Saxon. It was founded in 680 as the Priory of St Michael and St Milburga. It was destroyed in c874. It was refounded as a Cluniac priory in 1080. It was dependent on La Charité-sur-Loire church in France, until 1395. The monks then had English citizenship until the priory was dissolved in 1540.
