Propylaea, Castle Square, Chester, Cheshire
This classical building was built in 1811-1813 by Thomas Harrison of Chester. The word propylaea comes from Ancient Greece. It now refers to any archway entrance to a sacred area. The original propylaea was the entrance to the Acropolis in Athens.
