Remains of Monk Bretton Priory, Barnsley, South Yorkshire

The now ruined Monk Bretton Priory was founded in c1154. It housed monks of the Cluniac order. After a number of disputes concerning the appointment of its priors, it severed its ties with its mother house, La Charite sur Loir, and St John's in Pontefract. It became, in 1281, an independent Benedictine Priory. The priory was dissolved by Henry VIII in 1538. After the Dissolution the priory passed through various hands until it was acquired by Barnsley Borough council in 1932. The ruins have now been placed in the care of the state. This site is now in the care of English Heritage (2010).
