Roman Pharos, Dover, Kent

A Roman lighthouse, one of a pair constructed during the reign of Emperor Claudius in AD 46 on the headland standing either side of the major Roman port of Dubris. The lighthouse survives within Dover Castle. It was converted into a gunpowder magazine in 1582. This site is now in the care of English Heritage (2010). Read detailed archaeological description.
