Titus Salt was already a wealthy Bradford textile producer when he developed his new mill and model settlement at Saltaire. The original mill was opened in 1853. It was designed in an Italianate style by Lockwood & Mawson with Fairbairn as engineer. It is topped by distinctive 'bell turrets', and the massive chimney (right) was added in 1868
