Sewage Gas Outlet Pipe, Dorchester, Dorset

This sewage gas outlet pipe is on Fordington High Street. It dates from the late 19th century and is made from iron. Victorian sewage pipes generally run beneath the street. Gases build up in them, given off by the decomposing sewage. If there were no outlets such as this then the gases could explode.
