Sharow Cross, Sharow, North Yorkshire
This cross was built in the 13th century. It is the only surviving remnant of 8 crosses that marked the limits of the area of sanctuary within 1 mile of Ripon Cathedral (monastery). The monastery was founded by St Wilfred in 672. Sanctuary was first granted to Ripon Cathedral in 926.
