St John's Gate, St John's Lane, Clerkenwell, Greater London Authority

The south face of St John's Gate during the construction of the adjoining building on the east side of St John's Lane. St John's Gate was originally the south gateway to the Priory of Clerkenwell and dates from 1504. This view shows the gateway during the early stages of construction work for the building which now houses the Museum of the Order of St John. The workmen are posed for the camera in a very small and cluttered area including a horse and cart. Photographer: H W Fincham
