St Nicholas' Hospital, Salisbury, Wiltshire

These buildings include the remains of a 13th century hospital. The Earliest document mentioning a hospital on this site dates from 1227 and is a Deed of gift by Ella Countess of Salisbury wife of Longespeein, this is probably what is now a detached building to the northern most part of the site. Then in 1231 there are royal grants made for timber 'for building the hospital' by Bishop Bingham, who refers to an 'old hospital'. His 'new' hospital was most likely the buildings to the south of the site. Enough of the hospital survives to give an interesting example of medieval planning: a building designed for the separate needs, both spiritual and physical, of men and of women.
