St Osyths Priory, Gatehouse, St Osyth, Essex

The Augustinian priory was founded in 1121 and became an abbey in 1150. It was supressed in 1539 during the dissolution of the monasteries. Parts of the abbey were incorporated into a house in 1553 which was remodelled in 1865. Surviving elements of the priory include a 13th century chapel and this late 15th century gatehouse.
