Stench Pipe, Grays, Thurrock

This stench pipe was probably built in the mid 18th century as part of the sewage system for the now demolished Belhus Hall. The chimney probably acted as a foul air vent for sewage flushed into and then pumped along the culvert (pipe). It is also unusual for being built in such an elaborate and ornamental style.
