Sutton Mill, Sutton Road, Weymouth

This water mill on the River Jordon was formerly known as Sutton Poyntz Mill and dates from around 1820. Thomas Hardy, the novelist, in a letter of 1910, wrote: 'Overcombe Mill (in The Trumpet Major) is a composite picture of Upwey and Sutton Poyntz, containing features of both'. The mill had become derelict before it was converted to a house. The restoration was recognised by the Weymouth Civic Society and awarded one of its plaques.
