The Kursaal Amusement park was built in 1898-9 by a George Sherrin. It is Sherrin's major work outside London. He completed the dome of the London Oratory. The Kursaal is the only large dome he designed subsequently. It is the main architectural monument to Southend's Edwardian boom period. This building is the remnants of an amusement park which originally covered twenty six acres and included a menagerie, music hall, funfair, ninety shops and fifty-three houses.
