The Square, Corfe Castle, Dorset

A man in a hat, carrying a bundle of hay on his back, has been posed in this photograph. He would have needed to stand very still for quite a few seconds while it was taken. Two boys are siting on the steps of the old village cross. In 1897 a cross was put up above the steps to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria. The unusual roof of the house behind the steps is called a hipped roof. The photograph is part of the P T Deakin collection
