The Strand Gate, High Street, Icklesham, East Sussex
This shows one of the medieval gates of the town. The gates were constructed in the late 13th century. Medieval towns had defensive walls around them, with entrance gates that could be closed at night and in times of attack. Often the gates are the only parts to survive to the present day.
