The Strike School, Church Green, Burston, Norfolk

This school was built in 1917 by public subscription. It was built to allow local teachers, Mr and Mrs Higdon, of the village school to continue to teach the local children. They had been dismissed in 1914 by the education authorities for supporting farm workers. They felt the workers and their children deserved to be treated better. The Higdons continued to teach the children on the village green and in workshops until this school was built. The strike gained much national support, especially from Trade Unions. This was the source of much of the money for the school. It continued in use as a school until Mr Higdon died in 1939.
