The Talbot Hotel, Oundle, Northamptonshire

This inn was established in 1552 on a different site. It was rebuilt here in 1626. It is believed that stone from Fotheringhay Castle was used in the rebuilding and that it's fine 16th century staircase was also from the castle. The castle started as a 12th century motte and bailey castle. Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned there from 1586-7 until her execution in the great hall. In 1603 it was sold into private hands. It was then gradually robbed of its stone, for building, until nothing remained except the earthworks of the original motte and bailey castle.
