Tower Bridge and the Tower of London, Stepney, London

Built more recently than many people imagine in 1894, Tower Bridge is probably the most famous 'bascule' bridge in the world (a bridge where the spans tilt at the abutments to allow shipping to pass underneath). The hydraulic machinery used to raise the bridge has been open to the public since 1982. Urban legend has it that a London bus, unable to stop in time, once had to jump the gap between the opening spans.
